Newcomer Skill Level Paddles

As a newcomer you have had little to no instruction on how to wet exit and get back in your boat or prevent capsizes effectively. You should only paddle in protected waters near shore and with a friend that can show you the basics. Only attempt short crossings when accompanied and only launch when you know that the weather is good and not going to change. Avoid any tidal current. The Pacific Northwest is a beautiful place to discover by paddling but there are hidden dangers that you can avoid with a little bit of knowledge and skills.

This information is designed to provide basic information to help you in choosing appropriate paddle trips for your level of experience. The information may be old and outdated and I would encourage you to use several resources when a trip in unfamiliar areas. As always you are responsible for the safe operation and navigation of your own vessel. Happy Paddling!

  • This is a great afternoon work out paddle. Both launches have good access with short carries. The stretch of water front leading up to the West Point Light House seemingly transports you away from the busy city and drops you off on a wooded shoreline. Watch for all sorts of wildlife including Seals, Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, and occasionally Otters.

Many kayakers use this as a place to hone their foul weather skills, during the winter months winds regularly rip up from the south creating large waves and chaotic seas off of West Point and provide a fun down wind run back to Golden Gardens. You can also explore the marina and under the docks practicing your bow and stern rudders between the pilings. SUP'rs use the area for Yoga and surfing freighter waves.

In the summer its always fun people watching from the water along Golden Gardens and entertaining the children with your rolling skills.
