Transitional Skill Level Paddles

As a transitional paddler you have been shown and are proficient at wet exiting and self rescues in deepwater. You should have a solid brace to keep yourself upright, you may even be working on getting a reliable roll in the pool or on flat waters. You know the basic paddle strokes and are able to maneuver your boat proficiently on flat water with little wind. You should be able to paddle up to 8 miles in a protected inland environment over the course of a day.

This level of skill would be the equivalent of ACA L2 Skills or BCU 2 Star Skills.

This information is designed to provide basic information to help you in choosing appropriate paddle trips for your level of experience. • This was my very first coastal paddle and what got me hooked onto paddling on the coast. It offers a whole new level of diversity from sea life to vistas to dynamic waters. The body of water on this route is influenced by ocean swell coming down the straits. As such, at times it can be flat and calm and at other times be quite the handful.

I use magic seaweed.com to get the swell direction forecast from cape flattery to predict how the swell will influence this paddle. Anytime the swell direction is between 270-300 degrees and over 4’ you can expect the swell to make in this far. This means you can expect a surf launch landing at Crescent Bay.
